Greetings and welcome to the April issue of Microwaves & RF.
This month's Cover Story spotlights voltage-controlled oscillators that tune miniature synthesizers to 12 GHz. Using a hybrid approach based on miniature SAW and printed-circuit resonators, these 0.3-x-0.3-in. VCOs can tune from 100 MHz to 12 GHz. Two News Reports are featured in this issue as well. In "Cables And Connectors Link To New Applications," Nancy Friedrich observes that cables and connectors are continuously being created to fulfill the needs of today's applications while anticipating support for future needs. In this month's RF Primer, Jack Browne shows that filters for RF/microwave systems come in many different packages and technologies with response curves tailored to meet a wide range of applications.
Four Design Features are included in the April edition. The lead feature, "UNB Modulation Salvages Spectrum," shows that understanding the limitations and capabilities of ultranarrowband (UNB) modulation formats can help in applying these techniques to transport wireless data efficiently over crowded bandwidths. In "Evaluating Impedance Transformers With A VNA," some simple calibration techniques are applied to a vector network analyzer to help make accurate S-parameter measurements on a wide range of impedance transformers. The third Design Feature details the analysis of a 5.5-GHz dielectric resonator oscillator (DRO) for WLANs. The final article in this section is the second part of an article on analyzing the bearing accuracy of a monopulse system.
The April Product Technology section opens with a report on EM and math software for RF/microwave design. The latest EM and mathematical software tools are gaining in speed and sophistication, taking advantage of the processing power of modern multicore-processor computers. The section also highlights a converter/exciter that fires EW and ECM waveforms, custom synthesizers that span 167 to 6010 MHz, a power amplifier for WiMAX applications, and a radio that monitors pipeline integrity. The issue is rounded out by the Front End, editor's note, R&D Roundup, Application Notes, and more.
